GM is king of China
November 13, 2012 (Chinavestor) You may remember when Jeep made headline in the campaign trail, e.g. Chrysler will switch production to China. It turned to be a hoax and the smallest auto maker from Detroit commences a miniature footprint in the middle kingdom. But General Motors (NYSE:GM) is big in China and so is Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F). General Motors is so big in China that it sold more cars in China than in the US, in fact. Buick is a brand Chinese vie for and is the number one foreign brand in the country.
But number of cars sold is just half of the story. The other half is how much money General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Ford Motors (NYSE:F) actually made in there.
As the first chart testifies, General Motors (NYSE:GM) and its partners sold 665,000 cars in China vs. 652,000 in the US in the third quarter of 2012. Yet North America remained the profits center for the company. GM revenue was $23,3 billion in North America vs. $6,7 billion in China. Both US and China were profitable for General Motors (NYSE:GM).
